FORMER Manchester United star is set to join the second tier of football in America after being released from the EFL.

New Mexico United announced on Thursday that they have signed Tyler Blackett for the remainder of the 2026 USL Championship season, the division below the MLS.

Blackett, 32, has been let go from where he competed in the 2023/24 season.

To USL media, United Sporting Director Itamar Keinan said: “We are thrilled to add someone with Tyler’s pedigree to our club.

“Tyler is not only bringing a wealth of experience with him, but also real quality and leadership to our backline.

“Welcome to the Black and Yellow Tyler!”

Blackett grew up in the Man Utd academy before making 11 appearances for the Red Devils in the Premier League’s 2014/15 season when United finished fourth.

His debut came against where the visitors won 2-1.

After turning pro in 2012, the centre-back made his professional debut at 19 years old with Blackpool while on a loan spell from United.

Blackett spent four seasons at Reading before going to for just one.

And the 32-year-old is not a stranger to playing in North America following his days playing for FC Cincinnati in the US.

Blackett spent two seasons with the team across 31 appearances before heading back to the .

Most recently, the defender registered 16 appearances across two seasons with Rotherham.

On Instagram, one fan said: “Let’s go what a player.”

Another wrote: “I remember watching his debut under Louis Van Gaal for United.”

New Mexico currently sit sixth in the Western Conference of the second tier of men’s US football.

And while it’s early in the season, they will have to finish in the top eight if they want to reach the play-offs.

They will face Phoenix Rising next weekend.
