But just as it looked done, Ipswich swooped in with a late move.

That twist led to Akpom’s Birmingham medical being cancelled, and a new one scheduled with Ipswich who appeared to have stolen the signing at the last second.

However, the Blues didn’t give up and came back with a better offer hoping to win the tug-of-war.

Akpom reportedly prefers Ipswich but his current club Ajax want to to accept the Birmingham deal.

In the end, the forward completed a medical with Ipswich and now looks set to join the Tractor Boys.

Despite all this – Birmingham STILL haven’t thrown in the towel.

Reports suggest the Midlanders are leaving the door open for one final twist as they look to land the English forward.

And now, in a perfect bit of football theatre, Ipswich travel to Birmingham on Friday night for the opening game of the season- with emotions running high on both sides.
