BAYERN MUNICH and Real Madrid continued where they left off in the Champions League.
Last week’s breathless first leg included 40 shots – and this one was somehow even better.

Bayern progressed to the semis 6-4 on aggregate but even that does not tell a fraction of the story.
Trailing by a goal after defeat at home, Madrid levelled the tie within 60 seconds after Manuel Neuer – so crucial at the Bernabeu – passed straight to Arda Guler in the opening minute.
He still had a big task to finish from distance but did so with confidence.
Bayern hit back to equalise and move ahead overall after Aleksandar Pavlovic’s close-range header from a corner.
But Los Blancos were ahead again before long with Guler this time firing in a stunning free-kick to turn the tide.
Take a bow, Arda Güler 😮💨

Ballon d’Or seeking Harry Kane was never going to go goalless with them flying in left, right, and centre.
His composed strike had the home fans celebrating again before the break. This, his 50th goal of the season. Fifty. A half century.

Madrid hit back once more, going into half-time 3-2 up on the night and at 4-4 in the tie when Kylian Mbappe scored almost immediately after.
That was never going to be the end of the entertainment.
Bayern nearly went in front for the first time on Wednesday through a deflected shot within 70 seconds of the restart.
Dayot Upamecano could have scored from the resulting corner.
Neuer then had to stand tall to solidly deny Mbappe’s volley following a sweeping move that ended at the back post.
Vinicius Jr shanked one wide off his left foot, unusually subdued for most of the game but coming alive here.
With Madrid posing a threat on the counter, Mbappe took down a Jude Bellingham pass, made space from nowhere, and set up Fede Valverde for a shot which was easily saved.
Michael Olise tried his own effort from outside the box, curling in from the right side like Arjen Robben. Like Michael Olise.
Andriy Lunin turned it over but could not stop the waves of Bayern possession.
When Madrid did break, and often with Mbappe, they were dangerous still.
Mbappe cut the ball back from a good position but nobody could find the touch to score.
Olise responded by doing his thing again. This one was further away from Lunin but also the goal, ending up over the bar.
When sub Eduardo Camavinga saw red for a second yellow, given for delaying the restart of play, the tide turned massively in Vincent Kompany’s favour.
Real players complained and protested but the decision was made.
If it wasn’t in normal time, then extra time was surely going to bring a winner for Bayern.
And it did. Luis Diaz found space where it had been lacking against 11 men. He blasted in a late stunner off Eder Militao worthy of winning any tie. Even this one.
Olise eventually found his postage stamp and sealed one of the best ties.
Vinicius was left clapping sarcastically. The rest of the football world was just clapping.
More to follow…
