Yet one of their senior board members, Joan Soler, claims they would be in the running if any of the world’s top strikers become available.

That includes Norway international , 25, as well as his old Etihad strike partner Julian Alvarez, who now plays for Atletico Madrid.

Soler said: “Yes, we could sign players like Julian Alvarez or Haaland.

“These signings pay for themselves in five years and Barca’s finances are ready for something like this.”

Haaland’s interest in one day playing in Spain is well known.

However, he only in early 2025.   And, in any case, Barcelona would need to make sure Haaland fits in with their strict wage structure — and that could put the striker off.

Soler added: “At the end of the day, Barca must be very careful about which signings it makes in terms of the wage bill.

“We have set ourselves a limit and we are not going to exceed it. We have to sign players at market prices, keeping our salary scales in mind.”

But Barcelona could end up turning to City pal Omar Marmoush instead if Haaland is out of their reach.

Diario Sport report that the Egyptian, 27, has been earmarked as an alternative.

The reigning LaLiga champions have been keeping tabs on Marmoush since he was on Eintracht Frankfurt’s books.

And, having continued monitoring his performances since , Marmoush has been earmarked by boss Hansi Flick as an attacking option who would fit the bill.

There have been suggestions that the frontman was open to leaving City before the winter transfer window slammed shut because of struggling to secure regular starts this season.

And it is thought that Sky Blues chief Pep Guardiola would be open to selling Marmoush for less than the fee paid for his signature.
