Bashir Ahmed, ex-media aide to late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has raised concern about granting pardon to bandits in Nigeria.
Ahmad was reacting to the killing of 15 members of a vigilante group in Katsina State by “repentant bandits”.
The incident happened on Tuesday, March 17 2026, when the vigilante group on patrol intercepted and neutralized three suspected bandits in Falale village in Jibia Local Government Area of state.
In retaliation, armed bandits reportedly attacked the village and killed 15 people.
Reacting to the incident in a post on X, Bashir Ahmed claimed bandits only claim to repent in order to evade justice.
He wrote: “I just read a disturbing report that repentant bandits killed 18 members of a vigilante group during an encounter in the Jibia Local Government of Katsina.
“This reinforces the genuine concern that many who claim repentance do so only as an opportunity to evade justice.”
DAILY POST reports that Katsina and other North-West states facing intense insecurity had previously granted pardon to repentant bandits after engaging in peace negotiations.
