A MISSING backpacker’s cause of death has been confirmed after her body was found two years following her disappearance.

The Belgian hiker vanished without a trace in 2023 at the Philosopher Falls area in northwest Tasmania.

Her disappearance sparked a frantic search but to no avail – until her remains were found earlier this year.

Coroner Madeline Wilson has ruled Celine’s death an accident.

She found that her death was the result of “a series of errors” in the Tasmanian Wilderness between June 17 and 21, 2023.

She said: “The criminal did not identify any evidence of the involvement of an unknown person.”

Celine had been on a working holiday and had intended to return to the Australian mainland after her trek in Tasmania.

Nine days later she was reported missing to the as her family worried for her safety.

Her car was found at the Philosopher Falls car park on June 26, just before rough weather hit the area.

Police also consulted with an expert, Dr Paul Scott, to understand the chances of Celine surviving in the wilderness for that long.

Dr Paul Scott suggested it was unlikely that they would find Celine alive.

He advised police it was likely she became injured or succumbed to hypothermia after three or four nights outdoors.

Police established that her mobile phone last pinged off a base station at Waratah on June 20, 2023.

Rescue efforts yielded little results and police were unable to determine what had happened, leaving them baffled.

Two-and-a-half years after Celine vanished, a private search group initially under foliage.

The bombshell discovery helped searchers understand Celine’s whereabouts before she tragically died.

The phone was found “less than 100 metres from her last known GPS point”, Tasmanian explorer Rob Parsons said.

A volunteer search party then uncovered in January 2026, near her last known location.

and car keys were found near Arthur River at Waratah in February.

Tasmania Police Commander Nathan Johnston offered his condolences to Celine’s loved ones.

He said: “While this provisional confirmation will not ease their loss, we hope the outcome will provide them with some measure of clarity and closure.”

He also praised the huge community effort behind the search, thanking rescue teams and volunteers who “dedicated significant time and resources during the many search phases”.
