Prominent Nigerians gathered for the memorial service of Segun Awolowo, the grandson of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, on Friday.

The passing of Awolowo, who previously served as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, was communicated by his family on November 20. He was 62 years old.

The list of distinguished Nigerians present at the service included Femi Gbajabiamila, who represented President Bola Tinubu; former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; former Senate President Bukola Saraki and his wife, Toyin; Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Also in attendance were former governors James Ibori (Delta), Adeniyi Adebayo (Ekiti), and Gbenga Daniel (Ogun), along with various Anglican bishops and priests, traditional and religious leaders, and industry leaders.

Funeral Service of Segun Awolowo

The service was held at Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, in Lagos State.

In his tribute, Gbajabiamila reflected on Awolowo’s commitment to national service.

He stated: “Segun served Nigeria with remarkable passion and unwavering dedication.

“His later role as Secretary of the National Committee for the African Continental Free Trade Area highlighted his vision for a future for Nigeria and Africa based on trade, cooperation, and mutual prosperity.

“He was a devoted family man, a kind and gentle soul who connected with people’s hearts as effectively as he did with their minds.”

For his part, Saraki characterized Awolowo as the “true embodiment of a good man.”

“His character was exemplary, and his impact was significant. While we grieve his loss, we find solace in the knowledge that he lived a life filled with purpose and service. He will be greatly missed,” Saraki expressed.
