MORE than 37,000 asylum seekers have been in taxpayer-funded accommodation for more than a year — a 40 per cent surge in 18 months, figures reveal.

Overall, the number in asylum accommodation now exceeds 107,000.

More than 30,000 are , a rise since Labour’s July 2024 election win.

Just six per cent of small boat arrivals have been returned in that time.

Shadow Home Secretary said the rising numbers showed Labour lacked the “backbone to deport”.

He added: “Labour are moving from asylum hotels to long-term residential housing.

“This embeds the problem deeper into communities.

“Dispersal accommodation allows illegal immigrants to disappear into your community.”

“For every person moving out of shorter-term accommodation, three are being pushed into year-long stays.”
