The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in Taraba State has urged Governor Agbu Kefas to implement the long-awaited 25/35% salary increase for the staff of Taraba State Polytechnic, Suntai.
This appeal was made by the newly elected ASUP Chairman in the state, Dr. Bala Sule, during a press conference held on the institution’s campus in Jalingo.
Dr. Sule emphasized the ongoing delays in the execution of the approved salary increase and expressed concern over the backlog of unpaid salary arrears owed to staff.
He committed to prioritizing the financial welfare of union members throughout his tenure and called on the state government to urgently respond to the association's request.
“As the ASUP Chairman, I will do everything in my power to attract the attention of Governor Kefas and urge him to implement our 25/35% salary increase,” he stated.
“We will also bring up the issue of outstanding salary arrears and make it clear that keeping staff in financial distress is detrimental to the institution,” he added.
While acknowledging the difficulties faced by staff, Dr. Sule dismissed the idea of industrial action, emphasizing that the union would utilize diplomatic means to advocate for its demands.
“During my leadership, there will be no strike action of any kind. Even if the government does not meet our demands, we will continue to pursue dialogue to ensure our concerns are acknowledged,” he assured.
Dr. Sule also revealed plans to work alongside ASUP’s national and zonal leadership to further engage the state government and advocate for the implementation of the salary adjustments.
He reaffirmed the union’s dedication to staff welfare and highlighted that the new leadership would persist in seeking peaceful and constructive solutions to the challenges affecting its members.
