FORMER Olympic sprinter Arnaldo Abrantes has emerged as the top candidate to become Arsenal’s new first-team doctor.

It was revealed on Monday that following an injury-riddled season.

Dr Iqbal had been with since February 2024 but called it quits following a meeting with club officials last week.

The Telegraph now claims that ex-Olympian Abrantes is poised for the job.

Abrantes is understood to have left his most recent position as the head of medical services at at the end of the season.

The 39-year-old, who competed at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, has also worked for as head of performance.

His imminent arrival follows the , who has been tasked with investigating the recent injury crisis.

Despite this term, the Gunners have been plagued by injury issues.

, , , and are among the players who have been forced to miss several months of action.

Timber has even been due to an ongoing problem.

The Dutch FA claimed the full-back has “not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner.”

Timber suffered a groin issue while playing for Arsenal in March, an injury that sidelined him for ten weeks before he returned for a substitute cameo in the last month.

Arsenal have faced an intense schedule this season, playing 63 games across all competitions – more than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues.
