The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has announced that the recent arrests of Omoyele Sowore, Aloy Ejimakor, and Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of Nnamdi Kanu, illustrate Nigeria's drift toward anarchy and political instability.
The youth organization stated that the current environment of intimidation, harassment, and ethnic victimization surrounding the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has highlighted a significant breakdown of governance in Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu's administration.
In a strongly-worded statement released on Friday and signed by its National President, Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, the pan-Igbo youth group condemned the reckless actions of Bola Tinubu's administration, claiming that Nigeria is spiraling into chaos in a desperate attempt to silence voices advocating for justice, opposition, and reason in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
The youth council expressed that the current situation in Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu's leadership is dire, akin to a ship on the brink of capsizing after being hit by a tornado.
They expressed shock at the events of last Tuesday morning when President Tinubu, through the Nigerian police, ordered the arrest of activist Omoyele Sowore, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and the organizer of the initial phase of the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
“It is important to note that on October 20, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through Inspector General of Police Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the arrest of peaceful protesters, including Nnamdi Kanu's lawyer, Bar Aloy Ejimakor, Prince Emma Kanu, Barrister Kingdom Nnamdi Okere, and others during the peaceful FreeNnamdiKanu protest. They were later arraigned at Kuje Magistrate Court and remanded at Kuje Prison.
“President Bola Tinubu must act swiftly to order the release of Sowore, Aloy Ejimakor, Prince Emma Kanu, Barrister Kingdom Okere, and others, and initiate a process of national healing and genuine reconciliation to prevent a recurrence of crises similar to those in Madagascar and Nepal in Nigeria.
“Considering the increasing international calls for Nnamdi Kanu's freedom, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should heed the advice of respected Nigerian leaders by pursuing a political solution, dropping all charges, and ensuring his unconditional release,” Comrade Igboayaka urged.
“Nnamdi Kanu's situation underscores the issue of selective justice against the Igbo people, which could threaten Nigeria’s stability due to Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s actions,” he concluded.
