The State Working Committee (SWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has removed the party chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Ogar Eba, due to allegations of financial misconduct and authoritarian management.
This decision was made on Thursday at the APC state headquarters in Calabar.
Eba, who assumed the role of chairman in October 2021 under former governor Ben Ayade, faced accusations of embezzlement, misappropriation of party funds, arrogance, and neglect in paying stipends to party officials.
In a statement signed by SWC members, chapter chairmen, and other stakeholders, it was noted that Eba’s behavior had severely disrupted party operations and damaged relationships throughout the state.
This impeachment follows prior requests from the Forum of APC Chapter Chairmen, who alleged that he had withheld stipends for over three months, adversely affecting the welfare of ward and chapter officials.
The motion for his removal was proposed by the State Welfare Secretary, Okara Ekawu, and supported by the State Treasurer, Dr. Matthew Egom. They stated that the committee conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations before arriving at a unanimous conclusion.
Eba has been instructed to transfer all party assets and documents, including the management of the secretariat, to the acting chairman until further instructions are received from the National Executive Committee (NEC).
The Forum Chairman and Boki LGA Chairman, Kelvin Nyong, characterized the non-payment of stipends as unprecedented and accused Eba of fostering divisions within the party, violating Sections 21:2 (ii & v) of the APC Constitution.
Party leaders present reiterated their loyalty to Governor Bassey Otu and asserted that the leadership change was essential for ensuring stability and effective governance.
Eba had previously faced similar opposition approximately two years ago when party officials, including Chief Peter Higgins and former presidential aide Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, called for his dismissal over related accusations.
Last month, he stirred controversy by hosting a grand reception at the airport for former governor Ben Ayade and openly pledging his allegiance to him, an act perceived as undermining the current leadership.
