Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has raised alarms about the poor state of the Ibadan–Gbongan road, calling it a death trap.

Speaking with reporters on Sunday in Osogbo, Oyintiloye noted that the road, which connects Oyo, Osun, and Ondo states, poses a significant danger to travelers.

He cautioned that the ongoing neglect of the road could result in heightened risks, particularly during this festive season when an increase in commuters is anticipated.

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, urged the federal government to promptly address the situation before the road deteriorates further.

He mentioned that the road is in such dire condition that drivers have been compelled to use only one lane of the dual carriageway.

The APC leader emphasized that numerous deep potholes along the road, which is a crucial route connecting Southwest states with other parts of the country, have rendered it nearly impassable.

“I would like to urge the Federal Ministry of Works to swiftly find a solution and repair this road,” he stated.

“Every section of the road is nearly impassable, causing significant hardship for motorists traveling along it.”

“With increased traffic volume expected during the festive season, without immediate repairs, motorists may encounter even more difficulties and safety concerns,” he added.

While praising the federal government for its Renewed Hope infrastructure initiatives nationwide, Oyintiloye insisted that urgent action is necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians using this route.

“The deplorable state of the road has forced the dual carriageway to function as a single lane.”

“This situation is not conducive to the safety of road users, especially during this time. A reliable road network is essential for sustaining the nation’s economic growth, creating jobs, enhancing economic activities, and improving the quality of life for the people,” he remarked.

Oyintiloye further noted that the deteriorating condition of numerous roads across the nation has placed a considerable burden on the economy.

He pointed out that this issue results in the loss of billions of Naira each year due to reduced productivity and wasted resources.

“In addition to economic repercussions, the poor state of the road network has led to countless fatalities in preventable accidents and has put travelers at risk of insecurity,” he explained.

He also indicated that despite substantial annual budgets allocated for road construction and maintenance, the country continues to experience a persistent deficiency in the quality and quantity of its road infrastructure.

Nevertheless, he called on the federal government to expedite the rehabilitation and reconstruction of all roads requiring immediate attention as the festive period draws near.
