The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning that any officer found providing escort or protection for Very Important Persons (VIPs) will face arrest.
Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, issued this warning on Tuesday during an appearance on Politics Today, a program on Channels Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST.
Hundeyin characterized such assignments as illegal under the current directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun. He stressed that the enforcement operation is in full effect and that all officers previously assigned to VIP protection duties have been reassigned.
“The enforcement is ongoing. The IGP has directed that any police officer found escorting VIPs should be arrested as they are operating outside the law. All of them have been recalled,” he stated.
“The IGP instructed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit to go to Abuja airport and position his personnel there to arrest any police officer found escorting VIPs.
“He also issued the same order to the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State to proceed to Lagos airport and arrest any officer escorting VIPs. This underscores the seriousness of our stance,” he added.
The police PRO also mentioned that President Bola Tinubu’s directive is absolute and not subject to influence from the highest bidder.
Tinubu’s order to withdraw police escorts from VIPs aims to redeploy personnel to fundamental policing responsibilities amid escalating insecurity across the nation.
