The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has announced that voting will not occur at two Polling Units (PUs) during the governorship election in Anambra State, scheduled for November 8.

This decision is attributed to the absence of registered voters in those units.

Prof. Joash Amupitan made this announcement on Tuesday during a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) regarding the Anambra Governorship Election.

He stated that the Commission will deploy a total of 24,000 personnel for the election, which will take place in 5,718 of the 5,720 PUs.

“We plan to deploy 24,000 personnel,” he remarked during the meeting on Tuesday.

“Voting will be conducted in 5,718 of the 5,720 Polling Units across the state, while the two remaining Polling Units will not have any voting due to the lack of registered voters.”

On behalf of the ICCES, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Hassan Abdullahi, emphasized that comprehensive security measures are being implemented to ensure a smooth electoral process.

“These measures include enhanced surveillance, the deployment of adequate security personnel, and improved intelligence gathering to deter any attempts by disruptive elements or unscrupulous politicians to compromise the electoral process,” he stated.

“Additionally, we are proactively engaging with leaders of political parties and local stakeholders to convey a clear message that violence will not be tolerated during our elections.

“All participating political parties and their candidates must promote peace and encourage their supporters to behave in a manner that upholds the integrity of our electoral system.

“Any acts of violence during the elections will be met with a strong and unwavering response.”
