Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State stated on Wednesday that the poor condition of roads and the absence of essential social amenities in Enugu Ukwu and Aguleri brought him to tears in public.

The governor made this revelation during the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) gubernatorial campaign rally in Anambra East.

Soludo promised that if reelected, his administration would ensure that no one is left behind, emphasizing that everyone in the state will be included.

He remarked: “The oldest man in Enugu Otu told me that they needed a paved road. I was in Enugu Ukwu Aguleri, and that’s where I cried. I cried publicly because we traveled to the location for almost an hour and a half, and it was the worst road I have ever encountered.

“I went on to ask a question: what if someone fell ill and had an emergency at 1:00 am? I inquired if they had a hospital, and they replied no. I asked about access to pipe-borne water, and they said no; regarding electricity, they also said no.

“As I was passing through, the schoolchildren lined up along the road holding cardboard signs listing their needs. Some schools lacked seats and chairs, others reported leaking roofs, and many mentioned they had no teachers, among various issues.

“However, during my last visit to Enugu Ukwu and Aguleri, I noticed a solar-powered borehole scheme in operation at the square. I saw some power lines, and I went there to inaugurate a brand new general hospital staffed with medical personnel and doctors.

“On my recent visit, the schoolchildren were no longer displaying lists of problems; they were now along the road dancing and welcoming me.

“The first time I visited, I cried, but during my second visit, I laughed. I use this as an illustration because of the challenging terrain; building roads there is very costly. You cannot approach people and say there is no hope; our role is to provide hope.”
