The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has requested N25 billion in damages from the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, for alleged defamation and libel.

According to DAILY POST, Governor Okpebholo is also seeking a public apology from the PDP state chairman to be published in three national newspapers.

Okpebholo outlined his demands in a letter addressed to Aziegbemi, dated December 22, 2025, and signed by his attorney, R.I.D Okezie, Esq.

The letter is titled, “Demand for Damages and Apologies for Defamation of the Character of the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo.”

He has given the PDP state chairman a seven-day ultimatum to pay the N25 billion in damages and to issue a retraction in three national newspapers.

Excerpts from the letter state, “Our client’s attention has recently been drawn to a press release issued by you as the Factional Chairman of Edo State PDP, Caretaker Committee, on January 7, 2025. This press release has been published by various newspapers in Nigeria and online news platforms, wherein you repeatedly undermined the reputation and character of our client and the esteemed position he holds in this State.

“In the aforementioned publication, you included statements that disparaged and ridiculed the excellent reputation and image of our client, which he has diligently built over the years as a responsible politician, tracing back to his tenure as a Senator in the Nigerian National Assembly.”
