The green-fingered telly icon told council chiefs he is a “keen gardener” and wanted to work on the acres of land at his new Surrey pad.

A source said: “Alan is one of the world’s best-known gardeners so he saw the funny side of moving into a spacious new gaffe that doesn’t even have a greenhouse.

“He was probably tempted to simply say: ‘I’m Alan Titchmarsh’ on the form when asked to explain why he wanted to build a greenhouse, but he’s a very humble bloke and made his case carefully.”

Under the plans, a 4.48m by 3.14m greenhouse will be built in the grounds alongside an extension to the existing outbuilding housing a pool for the garden shed.

Titchmarsh’s planning representatives said: “The applicant is a keen gardener who has made a successful career from his love of , and having recently purchased the property, requires a location to store his gardening equipment.

“There is currently no garden store in which to keep his gardening equipment.

“The proposed development has been carefully considered to respect the character of the surrounding area and will not be detrimental to surrounding residential amenity.”

It also has its own detached pool house, a 32-foot swimming pool, a gym, a sauna and changing room, as well as an outdoor kitchen with an open fire.

Titchmarsh purchased the property after downsizing from his Grade II-listed Georgian farmhouse in Holybourne, Hants, where he had lived since 2002.
