Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has shed light on why his teammate Ola Aina faced challenges against Simon Adingra of the Ivory Coast during the final of the previous Africa Cup of Nations.

On February 11, 2024, Aina, who had been one of the standout players of AFCON, encountered difficulties while defending against Adingra.

The Nottingham Forest defender struggled to contain Adingra, who assisted both goals as the Ivory Coast came from behind to defeat Nigeria 2-1 in the final.

However, Iwobi has now disclosed that Aina's subpar performance in the AFCON final was due to an injury.

“For those who may not be aware, I’m sure Ola has mentioned it in various podcasts and interviews,” Iwobi stated on Episode 2 of The Bassey and Iwobi Show.

“He played with a grade 2c hamstring injury — I honestly don’t know how he managed it.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria has secured qualification for the 2025 AFCON, which will be held in Morocco, and they are hopeful of securing victory this time.
