A small hamlet is set to become one of the latest new towns promised by the Government.

Offering at least 10,000 homes, this northern settlement will be one of several across the country.

Speaking at the annual conference, Housing Minister Steve Reed stated that the Government will “do whatever it takes to get Britain building.”

Construction in this area is expected to commence before the next election.

This small village-size community borders the M25 on the northern outskirts of London, just 12 miles from Charing Cross.

Despite a small population of just 566 people, the town boasts its own railway station.

It is located on the Green Belt, a planning policy that protects undeveloped land around urban areas to prevent uncontrolled sprawl and maintain the rural character.

However, Enfield Council’s Local Plan identifies Crews Hill as an area “unique” in its ability to “accommodate a high proportion of new family housing.”

Currently, the village is known for its numerous garden centers and plant nurseries, along with its “underutilized” train station.

A local authority report from March 2024 described the impact a significant neighborhood expansion would have on the area.

According to the findings, it would “provide the opportunity to deliver a significant number of affordable family homes.”

It also stated that the development would “enable the delivery of facilities and related infrastructure to support both existing and new communities here.”

Other Locations

Work on a total of 12 new towns is set to be advanced as recommended by a report from the New Towns Taskforce.

However, the priority for construction in the current Parliament will likely be limited to Tempsford in Central Bedfordshire and South Bank, as well as Crews Hill.

Labour has identified these three areas as the “most promising sites” proposed.

A new riverside settlement in Thamesmead, Greenwich, has also been suggested.

Each of the dozen new towns will consist of at least 10,000 homes and could collectively result in 300,000 houses being built across England.

12 New Town Locations

  • Adlington, Cheshire East
  • South Gloucestershire
  • Crews Hill, Enfield
  • Heyford Park, Cherwell
  • Leeds
  • Victoria North, Manchester
  • Marlcombe, East Devon
  • Milton Keynes
  • Plymouth
  • Tempsford, Central Bedfordshire
  • Thamesmead, Greenwich
  • Worcestershire Parkway, Wychavon

The New Towns Taskforce recommends that at least 40% of these new homes should be affordable.

Labour has pledged to initiate the construction of 1.5 million new homes over the course of the Parliament, aiming to expand homeownership to more Britons.

Among the measures is a “New Towns Unit,” which aims to inject both private and public funds into transport links, GP surgeries, schools, and open green spaces in the new settlements.

Ministers also plan to model the construction and planning efforts behind each town on the regeneration of Stratford, east London, leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games.

While some of the new towns Labour plans to build will be standalone settlements, others will be expansions of existing towns or new areas within cities.

Environmental assessments need to be conducted before planning and building work for each location can begin in earnest.

More on UK Towns

Additionally, new developments are coming to the UK with 4,500 homes, shops, parks, and sports pitches.

Furthermore, plans have been revealed for 4,000 homes, new shops, and a hotel located next to a major motorway.

A popular English seaside town is set to receive a new “creative quarter” and beachfront café as part of its development.
