Adamawa tricycle owners participate for first time in May Day celebration

Published on May 01, 2025 at 05:08 PM

Members of the Adamawa State branch of the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria, TOAN, on Thursday took part in the march past conducted as part of activities marking this year’s Labour Day.

It was TOAN’s first time of participating in the celebration.

The commercial tricyclists thus joined the celebration with a renewed sense of identity and inclusion, according to the State Chairman of TOAN, Bashir Jimeta.

Bashir Jimeta told newsmen at the Ribadu Square venue of the Labour Day event that the participation of TOAN in the 2025 May Day celebration symbolizes a new dawn of recognition and integration into the formal labor movement in Adamawa State.

Bashir who disclosed that TOAN recently attained full registration with the Trade Union Congress, TUC, said the development marked a significant transformation from an informal group to a formally recognized affiliate of the TUC.

He said of the Labour Day celebration, “This day means a lot to us. It is not just about celebration; it is a reflection of our journey towards recognition and empowerment. Being part of the TUC in Adamawa State gives us a stronger voice and a clearer platform to advocate for the welfare of our members.”;

He appealed to all Keke NAPEP riders and owners in the state to be united and committed to the development of the union.

“This is our time to build, to organize, and to serve. We urge all members to embrace this new chapter with dedication and discipline,”; Jimeta said.

Owners or operators of tricycle or Keke NAPEP or Okada, as the vehicle is variously called around the country, are vital transporters around Adamawa State where the vehicle is used as the sole intra-city taxi in the capital, Yola, and other major towns.
