The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed its sorrow over the passing of Prof. Adamu Baikie, the first professor of education from Northern Nigeria.

A statement released by the forum’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof. T. A. Muhammad-Baba, stated that Baikie was a mentor to many and a remarkable example of Arewa’s rich tradition of scholarship and advanced studies.

The forum acknowledged that a brief tribute like this cannot adequately capture Professor Baikie’s immense contributions to academia, both nationally and internationally.

It celebrated Baikie’s accomplishments at Ahmadu Bello University, where he played a vital role in developing the Faculty of Education and the Institute of Education, helping to train professional teachers for several decades.

The statement read, “It is with deep sadness that the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) received the news of Professor Adamu Baikie’s passing, who distinguished himself as a pioneering educationist, university administrator, dedicated public servant, and mentor to many, embodying Arewa’s finest traditions of scholarship and advanced studies.

“Through these efforts, Prof. Baikie has established a remarkable legacy of excellence in both scholarship and public service. The ACF mourns the significant loss of such a monumental figure in the realm of knowledge.”

“He went on to serve as Vice Chancellor of the emerging University of Benin (1978 – 1986), during which he ensured the institution became one of Nigeria’s premier universities.

“His notable achievements led to his recruitment as Vice Chancellor of the University of Lesotho (1988 – 1996) and later at Nasarawa State University (2001- 2009), where he again laid a strong foundation for the institutions.

“Thus, Prof. Baikie’s name became synonymous with excellence, characterized by his humility and integrity, remaining a significant figure in Nigeria's academic history until his passing. His life and service reflected Arewa’s esteemed association with scholarship in service to society. Many will remember Prof. Baikie for his trademark humility, despite his remarkable accomplishments.”

ACF extended its condolences to the family and friends of the late Professor Baikie, as well as to the governments and people of Kaduna and Kano States, the Ahmadu Bello University, University of Benin, and the National University of Lesotho communities, along with his numerous mentees and those who benefited from his wise and fatherly guidance over the years.

ACF also joined in prayers that Almighty God grants him eternal peace. May the family and communities he has left behind find solace in knowing that Prof. Baikie’s life was truly well-lived.
