A private jet experienced a tire burst on Thursday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, leading to a temporary closure of the runway.
Airport officials have confirmed that the aircraft has been removed and regular operations have resumed.
The incident reportedly took place around 2 PM, resulting in the temporary halt of activities.
Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), verified the occurrence.
“I was informed that a private aircraft encountered a tire burst upon landing. However, it has been cleared from the runway and operations are back to normal,” he stated.
“The aircraft, while attempting to exit the runway via A4, had its nose wheel lodged in the grass verge, with its fuselage remaining on the runway. As a result, the runway was closed until the aircraft could be towed away,” Achimugu added.
DAILY POST reports that this temporary closure follows a previous shutdown of the Abuja airport’s runway for maintenance a few months ago, which caused delays in flights.
It is worth noting that on November 12, 2023, a flight operated by Aero Contractors (registration 5N-BYQ) landed at NAIA and, while trying to exit the runway, had its nose wheel stuck in the grass verge, making part of the runway unusable and leading to a temporary closure.
