A member of the House of Representatives from Abia, Obi Aguocha, on Tuesday, had a heated exchange with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas for allegedly disregarding a letter concerning the health of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, raised a point of privilege during Tuesday’s session. He stated that a letter he submitted on August 26 to Speaker Abbas, Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and President Bola Tinubu regarding Kanu’s declining health had not yet received a response.
“The Nigerian Medical Association has conducted a second evaluation, and the results further confirm the deteriorating health of Nnamdi Kanu. He is suffering from organ deficiencies, low potassium levels, and is, as we speak, on the brink of death,” he stated.
“Mr. Speaker, this is not a political issue; it is a fundamental human right that should be recognized for Nnamdi Kanu.”
“Many others in similar situations have been granted the opportunity to travel abroad for medical treatment.”
“Nnamdi Kanu has not been convicted of any crimes in Nigeria and deserves protection under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he added.
The discussion quickly escalated as the Speaker questioned Aguocha’s use of “point of privilege” to demand action.
Aguocha mentioned that he had visited the Speaker’s office, asserting that his motion was a “matter of life and death.”
However, Abbas maintained that the House floor was not the appropriate venue for such follow-up and advised Aguocha to speak with him directly. He reiterated that he had no obligation to reveal what actions had been taken regarding the letter.
