A SPRAWLING castle once home to the rich and famous now lies in ruin after being abandoned for 70 years.

Built in the 18th century, the eerie Dalquharran Castle sits abandoned in the Ayrshire countryside.

The Scottish fortress lies just six miles from the coastal town of Girvan and was constructed in the late 1700s before falling into disrepair in the 20th century.

The castle has been abandoned for 70 years following the Second World War as it was too large and expensive to maintain.

It can now be found reclaimed by nature with trees surrounding it and even through it.

Despite attempts to preserve and restore the castle, it has faced a number of challenges including vandalism and decay.

Former Prime Minister Herbert Asquith stayed there in the winter of 1904-05.

As did the great-grandfather of Hollywood megastar, Helena Bonham Carter .

The lead roof was removed in 1967 so the owners could declare it as uninhabitable and avoid paying rates.

The castle was designated a category A listed building in 1971, meaning it’s considered to be of national or international architectural or historical importance.

Its listing described it as “a castle-style mansion by Robert Adam, circa 1790”.

The interiors were in good condition in the late 1960s, where it was last used as a school for a brief period.

But photographs published in early 2017 confirmed that the interiors were in total ruin – and entry into the building was prohibited for safety reasons.

It’s often confused with the ruined Old Dalquharran Castle which stands nearby but was left abandoned around 1800.

The “new” castle has a grand central entrance hall and a spiral staircase that allowed light to pour in from the top.

In front of the entrance stood long, low building for the stables which has also been claimed by nature and lies in ruins.

The entire 261-acre estate was put up for sale at a guide price of £800,000 in June 2019.

The property was listed as including “medieval ruins of Dalquharran Castle and the striking Dalquharran Mansion House, productive farmland, mature woodland and a number of smaller development opportunities”.

Although the mansion cannot be touched except to restore it, estate agents said there was permission for a golf course and homes on the land, which is located about 50 miles south of Glasgow – it is no longer listed for sale.

The Sun has also recently reported on an abandoned millionaire’s mansion with the car still in the driveway and a half-eaten meal in the kitchen.

An urban explorer revealed creepy shots of the sprawling property which looks as if it’s frozen in time.

A Victorian train station abandoned over 70 years ago has also been transformed into a stunning tourist attraction.

Located in an affluent area near an infamous cemetery, the eerie station first opened its doors over 150 years ago.

And last month, a YouTuber discovered an eerie abandoned town which looks like a scene out of the Walking Dead.

The creepy abandoned community was once home to thousands of British soldiers but now it is slowly decaying with buildings falling apart.
