Human rights advocate and attorney, Deji Adeyanju, has reacted to former Attorney General of the Federation and ex-Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, urging him to take responsibility and refrain from what he termed “shedding fake crocodile tears” regarding his impending confrontation with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Adeyanju dismissed Malami’s claim that the EFCC’s intention to arrest and prosecute him is politically motivated, labeling the assertion as baseless and misleading.

Recently, the anti-corruption agency detained Malami over alleged financial misconduct related to his time as Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

However, the former minister contended that the actions against him constitute political harassment.

Various opposition politicians have also condemned Malami’s arrest, suggesting it represents an effort by the Federal Government to silence dissent and suppress different viewpoints.

In response, Adeyanju urged the EFCC to act decisively and thoroughly investigate Malami’s alleged involvement in matters concerning funds associated with the late military leader, General Sani Abacha, as well as other purported corrupt activities during his tenure.

In a statement titled: “Malami must be prosecuted by the EFCC despite his crocodile tears,” Adeyanju noted that Malami’s accusations against the EFCC, claiming the agency is motivated by political bias and thus unfit to investigate him, are unfortunate.

He stressed that the commission should move forward without delay in examining Malami’s actions, particularly regarding issues related to the Abacha loot and his overall performance while in public service.

Adeyanju further emphasized that holding public office is a position of trust, and both former and current officials must be prepared to fully account for how they managed that responsibility.

He also pointed out that Malami exhibited little restraint during his time in office, allegedly using state power against political adversaries.

Adeyanju remarked that Malami should not expect immunity from prosecution, having previously overseen similar actions against others while he was in office.

Adeyanju stated: “The EFCC should proceed without hesitation to investigate Mr. Malami, especially regarding his management of all issues related to the Abacha loot.

“Malami showed no restraint while in government and wielded state power against everyone, including opposition members. Having subjected others to prosecution, he cannot now evade the same process.”
