THE A31 closed after a serious crash this morning – with a 12-mile stretch shut off for hours.

The westbound carriageway of the road was blocked off following the collision in Hampshire.

Cops raced to the scene shortly after 3am, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.

Drivers were forced to change route – as queues built up in the area.

One local told the Bournemouth Echo that they had “never seen anything like it”.

Peter Lovesey added: “There were lorries stuck in laybys, and loads of police and forensics vans.”

The road reopened at around 10.30am.
