A MAJOR police incident has sparked traffic chaos for drivers on the A1M.

Motorists are facing long delays and a diversion is in place with the A1M southbound in West Yorkshire shut since 4am.

National Highways Traffic Officers are assisting with traffic management.

National Highways said: β€œThe A1M in West Yorkshire is closed southbound between J41 (M62) and J40 near Pontefract due to a police led incident which occurred shortly after 04:00 this morning.”

Diversion Routes:

Road users are advised to follow the Solid Square symbol on road signs.

Drivers travelling from the A1M:

-Exit the A1M at J41 and proceed onto the M62 eastbound for approximately 2 miles.
-Exit the M62 at J33 and proceed to the end of the slip road.
-At the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the slip road and proceed onto the A1M Southbound.

Drivers traveling from the M62:

-Driving eastbound on the M62, remain on the M62 at J32A and proceed along this road for approximately 1.5 miles.
-Exit the M62 using the J33 exit slip road and proceed to the end of the slip road.
-At the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the slip road and proceed onto the A1 Southbound.
