A MASSIVE blaze has ripped through a residential block in London as up to 70 firefighters descend on the scene.

Emergency services were scrambled to Hackney, , to tackle the flames on Wednesday evening.

London Fire Brigade were called to the blaze just after 8pm with ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters deployed to Mount Pleasant Lane in Clapton.

Pictures of the scene show thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky with local residents told to keep their windows and doors closed.

A rest centre has also been set up for those affected by the fire.

London Fire Brigade said in a statement: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a fire on Mount Pleasant Lane in Clapton.

“The building is affecting a block of maisonettes.

“The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke and we are advising people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke travel.

“A rest centre has been set up locally for residents impacted by this fire and the Brigade is working alongside the local authority and partner agencies to support these residents.

“The Brigade was first called about the fire at 2004 and Control Officers have mobilised crews from Stoke Newington, Tottenham, Homerton and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

“A 32-metre turntable ladder is also in attendance.”
