The North-Central All Progressives Congress, APC, Forum has backed a former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, for the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State.
Adamu served as Nigeria’s 20th IGP, from January 2019 to April 2021.
Speaking with journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday shortly before leaving for Lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia, Chairman of the North-Central APC Forum, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, said after consultations, APC stakeholders in the zone have come to the conclusion that Adamu is the right person to succeed Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule.
The Forum noted that even before it decided to back Adamu for the position, stakeholders in Nasarawa State had been calling on him to contest the governorship poll in the North-Central state.
The statement highlighted Adamu’s career as a police officer, particularly his role in Interpol, where he served for over 10 years, and his stint as IGP, as evidence that the former police chief has the experience and capacity req7 for the assignment.
At a time Nigeria is struggling with insecurity, the Forum believes Adamu’s election as governor will guarantee security in Nasarawa and other parts of the North-Central, due to his experience as a security chief.
“In line with our mandate to work for the progress and development of the North-Central, APC stakeholders in the zone, under the umbrella of North-Central APC Forum, have endorsed former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, for the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State.
“We arrived at this endorsement after extensive consultations with APC leaders and stakeholders in Nasarawa State and the North-Central at large. From our consultations, we believe Mohammed Adamu is the right person to continue the good works of current Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule.
“Having Mohammed Adamu as governor of Nasarawa State will not only guarantee the development of the state, it would also ensure security of lives and property in not only Nasarawa but the entire North-Central due to his experience at the top levels of international and national security apparatus.
“He will replicate what he did at Interpol for more than 10 years, and as Nigeria’s IGP, to ensure peace and security in Nasarawa State and the North-Central,” Zazzaga said.
The North-Central APC Forum chairman pointed out that already, several prominent individuals and groups in Nasarawa State, including the Dangaladiman Lafia, Alhaji Dahiru Abdullahi Othman, APC youths under the aegis of Progressive Youths for a Greater Nasarawa, the Raba Gardama Group led by Alhaji Mai Koli and Hon. Musa Ali (Dan Sarari Keffi), the Nasarawa Tricycle Riders’ Association and stakeholders from Lafia, have already backed Adamu for the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa.
“Ex-IGP Mohammed Adamu served at various commands of the Nigeria Police Force and rose to the pinnacle of his profession, becoming the Inspector General of Police.
“During Mohammed Adamu’s tenure as IGP, the menace of banditry was reduced to the barest minimum and the Kaduna-Abuja expressway was cleared of bandits. He is also a proven administrator, which is very important in discharging the mandate of a governor,” he added.
The North-Central APC Forum called on its members, and the newly elected executives of the party in Nasarawa State, to support Adamu’s gubernatorial bid.
“We are directing all our supporters in Nasarawa State, under the leadership of our coordinator, Hon. Nasir Babanle, to go all out and support the governorship ambition of former IGP Adamu.
“We are also urging the newly elected APC exco in Nasarawa State, at the ward, local government and state levels, to support Mohammed Adamu’s governorship bid.”
It will be recalled that Adamu had in April 2025 announced his intention to contest the Nasarawa governorship election in 2027.
The ex-IGP made the announcement at a meeting with members of the APC State Working Committee in Lafia, saying he was encouraged to vie for the office by calls from people of the state.
In the same vein, the North-Central APC Forum condemned the arrest and prosecution of its members by some Nasarawa government officials over political differences.
It warned the concerned government officials to stop harassing citizens who are not in support of their political aspirations.
“We are warning those within the government of Nasarawa State who are using political powers to arrest and prosecute citizens who they feel are working against their interests to desist from doing so.
“One of our members, Kabiru Dalha, was arrested and detained by a government official for more than 50 days and is currently being prosecuted in court, even though he never mentioned the name of the government official.
“We condemn his arrest and prosecution. We don’t want to join issues with the government officials involved but we are warning them to desist from such action otherwise we go against them politically,” Zazzaga said.
