The former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mark Jacobs, asserts that the current trend of defections by the party's governors and lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is motivated by elite interests rather than grassroots support.
Jacobs made this observation on Saturday during an interview on Arise Television, emphasizing that these actions are likely to have negative repercussions.
The PDP leader cautioned that Nigeria is moving towards a one-party state under the APC, as increasing numbers of opposition politicians are defecting under governmental pressure.
“We are heading towards a one-party state — this is the reality. However, I want to make it clear that this is an elitist movement.
“Most individuals at the grassroots level are unaware of what is occurring; they don’t even recall that a prominent member of the party has defected,” Jacobs stated.
He further explained that the APC's expanding dominance is not sustainable and will lead to internal strife as long-time members are replaced by defectors seeking political safety.
