The head coach of the Benin Republic national team, Gernot Rohr, has announced that the country's Football Association has reported the Turkish Super Lig club Goztepe to the football governing body, FIFA.
This action was taken due to the club's decision to prevent Junior Olaitan from joining the national team for World Cup qualifiers.
It has been reported that the club refused to allow the midfielder to join his national team because he is currently recovering from an undisclosed injury.
This means he will not participate in Benin Republic’s final two matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Lesotho.
Olaitan, who was raised in Nigeria but chose to represent Benin Republic, did not play in the last two games for Goztepe.
The Turkish club is required under FIFA regulations to release Olaitan to the Benin Football Federation, regardless of whether the player is injured or not.
In a statement reported by Mega Sports, Rohr said, “He is not with us because his club prevented him from joining the national team.
“We have therefore sent a letter to FIFA to report this situation. Even an injured player must report to his national team’s training camp.”
Benin Republic is currently at the top of Group C in the African qualifying series due to FIFA’s decision to deduct 3 points from South Africa.
This decision was made after South Africa fielded an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, during their 2-0 victory against Lesotho last March.
