Former Nigeria international has advised the Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, not to include Tolu Arokodare in the lineup against Benin Republic on Tuesday.

Nigeria is set to face Benin Republic, marking their final match in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series.

After defeating Lesotho 2-1 on Tuesday, Nigeria has kept their hopes alive but must secure a victory against Benin Republic to maintain any chance of traveling to North America next year.

Adepoju stated that Chelle should not make the mistake of starting Arokodare in Nigeria’s lineup, given the striker’s disappointing performance against Lesotho.

Arokodare, who plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers, did not meet expectations during the match against Lesotho.

Adepoju expressed on Sporty TV that the team’s “first-half performance was lacking in quality and attacking intent.”

He was particularly disappointed with the Wolves striker’s failure to convert a header, noting that his “inability to direct the ball effectively proved to be costly.”

“He should have capitalized on that opportunity,” he emphasized.

Adepoju questioned why Chelle did not substitute the Premier League striker at halftime, asserting that “the forward’s playing style did not align with the team’s attacking rhythm.”

Adepoju, who had a notable career with Real Madrid, criticized Arokodare’s positioning, stating it often “interfered with Victor Osimhen’s movements, causing confusion in the attack.”

He pointed out that Osimhen and Arokodare “frequently made runs into the same spaces instead of alternating between the near and far posts, which restricted Nigeria’s offensive width and efficiency in the final third.”

Looking ahead, Nigeria faces a vital match against Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday.

Nigeria must win against Benin Republic to have any hope of securing a spot at the World Cup next year.
