Former Super Eagles captain and ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has expressed skepticism regarding the list of players selected for the national team for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Mikel stated that he believes there is no chance that head coach Eric Chelle could have made his selections without external influences.

Chelle recently announced his 28-man squad in preparation for the tournament.

The former Mali national team coach left out notable players such as Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare, Crystal Palace’s Christantus Uche, and Celtic’s Kelechi Iheanacho.

During his Obi One Podcast, Mikel commented that the selection process did not reflect true sporting merit.

“From what I hear, I don’t believe the right players are being selected,” the former Chelsea midfielder remarked.

“I think the manager lacks the full authority to choose whom he wants. There seems to be significant influence on his selections,” he added.

Nigeria is set to play against Egypt in a preparatory match within the next few hours before facing Tanzania in their opening Group C game. The other teams in the group include Uganda and Tunisia.
