The inaugural Abia Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta for all tertiary institutions is set to commence on November 25th, featuring 1,000 teams from various public and private tertiary institutions across the state competing in 26 distinct sports.

The sports include football, track and field, lawn tennis, swimming, and 22 additional activities.

The Abia State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, announced this on Thursday, stating that the state government is organizing the fiesta to foster unity among schools, harness the talents of students, and divert their attention from cultism, drug abuse, and other negative behaviors.

She explained that the events, taking place simultaneously at various venues in Abia State from November 25 to 28, are being coordinated by the Abia State Ministry of Tertiary Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

Additionally, she mentioned that the fiesta aims to encourage extracurricular activities among Abia youths, instill a sense of belonging, shift students' mindsets from negative to positive, and improve relationships between students and their lecturers.

Hon. Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, also commented that the first Abia tertiary institutions games will help identify new athletes who will represent Abia State in sporting events.

He noted that track and field competitions will occur at the Umuahia Township Stadium, football matches will be held at Ibeku High School, and lawn tennis events will take place at the Ridge Club in Umuahia.

Ananaba emphasized that Governor Alex Otti recognizes the significance of youth involvement in his administration, adding that accommodations and security measures have been arranged to ensure smooth events.
