The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) has raised concerns about the increasing threat of zoonotic diseases, revealing that these infections account for approximately 2.7 million deaths globally each year.
The association made this announcement on Monday during a press conference in Jalingo, Taraba State, as part of the events marking its 62nd Annual Congress and Annual General Meeting (AGM), themed “Animal Health, Food Safety and Security: Ensuring a Healthy and Productive Nigeria.”
During the briefing, the NVMA National President, Dr. Moses Arokoya, pointed out that about 65 percent of human infections are derived from animals, and 75 percent of emerging diseases are zoonotic.
“Zoonotic diseases are one of the primary topics of discussion at this year’s Congress. They have become a critical global health issue,” Dr. Arokoya remarked.
He also voiced significant concern regarding the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), labeling it a “looming global crisis.”
“By 2050, it is estimated that 39 million individuals could die each year due to antimicrobial resistance. This is an extremely serious matter that demands immediate attention both in Nigeria and globally,” he cautioned.
The association further expressed dismay at the declining condition of abattoirs nationwide and the lack of veterinarians across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
“We cannot confidently state that every local government in Nigeria has a veterinarian. Veterinarians are the guardians of public health, and their absence in many communities presents a significant risk to food safety and disease management,” Arokoya stated.
He urged the federal government to declare a state of emergency regarding abattoir operations, stressing the necessity to improve meat hygiene and enhance surveillance systems to protect public health.
The four-day Congress is anticipated to feature numerous distinguished guests, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and other dignitaries from both Nigeria and abroad.
Zoonotic diseases are infections that can be transmitted between animals and humans, posing a substantial threat to global health, food safety, and economic stability.
