Abia State Governor, Alex Otti of Abia State has said that some medical professionals from outside the State and the country have applied for the ongoing recruitment of doctors, nurses and other medical staff in the State.
He disclosed that applications had so far been received from Zambia, South Africa and some other States in Nigeria.
Otti, who made the disclosure at the Government House, Umuahia, Thursday evening during his monthly media chat, said that the application received from outside Abia and Nigeria, underscored the confidence the outside community places on his administration.
He reiterated that the employment of the 771 medical professionals would be based on merit where different tests are conducted to identify the best persons for the jobs.
He announced that more Primary Healthcare Centres have been functionalised in the State, adding that his administration will ensure that accommodations are provided for the medical staff of the PHCs, for effective 24 hour service.
The Governor, who spoke about the agricultural programs in Abia, said that Abia farmers were being supported to move from subsistence to commercial production, and said the policy would also checkmate rural-urban migration.
He said that the technological system had been introduced to identify and monitor genuine farmers in the State, noting that 45,000 farmers have so far been enumerated.
Otti further expressed satisfaction that all the 33 Courses at Oggbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, most of which were previously withdrawn by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) had now been re-accredited.
