The Osun State Police Command has reaffirmed that the prohibition on fireworks remains in effect as the Christmas festivities draw near.

The police department has also cautioned residents against the use of fireworks and other explosive devices.

This warning was conveyed in a public service announcement by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, and was disseminated by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on Wednesday.

The statement emphasized that the command has established “a comprehensive and effective security plan for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.”

The command also pointed out the dangers and security risks associated with the use of firecrackers, bangers, and pyrotechnics during the holiday season.

According to the statement, “the loud noises generated by such explosives are frequently mistaken for gunfire or improvised explosive devices, leading to panic, anxiety, and unnecessary security alerts during a period of heightened national security concerns.”

“The use of firecrackers, bangers, and fireworks in residential neighborhoods, near hospitals, places of worship, markets, bus stations, along major roads, and in any other locations is strictly forbidden.”

Gotan, who urged parents and guardians to prevent their children from using fireworks, noted that such behavior could incite unwarranted alarm among the public.

“Parents and guardians are urged to discourage their children and wards from using these devices as it could incite panic,” the statement concluded.

The Commissioner of Police also instructed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of Tactical Units to enhance patrols throughout the state to enforce the ban.

“Officers have been directed to respond decisively yet professionally to anyone found using firecrackers, thereby causing public disturbances or fear,” he stated.

The command warned that anyone whose actions result in public disorder, injury, or property damage due to the use of fireworks will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

It assured residents of sufficient security coverage during the holiday season and beyond, reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace and order throughout the state.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or actions that could disrupt the peace to the police via two dedicated phone lines: 08039537995 and 08123823981,” the statement concluded.
