The Edo State Government has issued a one-week deadline to former Deputy Governor Godwin Omobayo to return all government property and assets currently in his possession.

This ultimatum was announced in a statement released by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday.

It is important to note that Omobayo was sworn in on April 8, 2024, by Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa after being nominated by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, following a fallout with Phillip Shaibu.

DAILY POST reports that Shaibu was previously impeached by the state House of Assembly but was later reinstated.

The statement clarifies that all assets acquired or utilized by Omobayo during his public service are considered state property and must be returned upon leaving office.

“The government has noted with concern that numerous official items, including vehicles, documents, and other state-owned assets assigned to Mr. Omobayo during his brief and illegitimate tenure, have not yet been surrendered to the appropriate authorities, despite several formal reminders.

“The ongoing retention of such property constitutes a clear violation of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets.

“The Edo State Government emphasizes that all assets acquired or used during public service remain the property of the State and must be returned upon the end of one’s term in office,” the statement concluded.

Itua mentioned that failure to comply within the specified timeframe would lead the government to instruct the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to proceed with his arrest and ensure the prompt recovery of all state assets still in his possession through lawful means.
