President of De-Advocates for Justice, Comrade Israel Joe, stated on Wednesday that the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, is “lawless” for implementing the enforcement of tinted glass regulations within the state. This assertion was made in a counter-statement directed at CP Abaniwonda.
It is important to note that CP Abaniwonda had mandated the enforcement of the tinted glass permit throughout the state starting October 2, despite an ongoing case brought by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The NBA’s lawsuit against the IGP is still awaiting a decision.
Joe expressed, “We are deeply disappointed to learn about the enforcement of the tinted glass policy across Delta State commencing tomorrow, October 2, as announced by the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, through the Delta State Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe.”
According to Joe, “It is astonishing that such directives are being issued at a time when the nation commemorates independence, a concept that symbolizes freedom. This indicates that we are not free from the oppressive behaviors of those in power.”
Joe further stated, “The matter concerning the tinted glass policy is still pending resolution by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
“The legal action questions the legitimacy, constitutionality, and ultimately the lawfulness of the police regarding such a policy.
“Legally, the status quo should remain, especially as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has acknowledged receipt of the lawsuit.”
He also remarked, “The directive issued by the CP of Delta lacks legality and suggests dictatorial tendencies aimed at extorting Deltans through unlawful yet unconstitutional orders.
“I hope the Inspector General of Police will bring the CP of Delta to account, and I urge the residents of Delta State to resist such directives. We will soon take to the streets to highlight the disgraceful actions of the Police in Delta State as we advocate for the principles of a free nation on this Independence Day.”
