When Cross resided in Hastings—he now lives in Lincolnshire—he frequently carpooled with McDonald to UK events.
Cross expressed: “I’m going to miss John.
He’s truly one of the best. We would wake up in the morning for a walk when we were away. And whenever I travel abroad, I also enjoy long walks with John.
“We’d rise at 8 am, go for a pleasant four-mile walk, then grab some coffees and return a couple of hours later.
“I have won numerous events with that type of preparation. He was mentally beneficial for me.
“When I was living in Hastings, he was nearby. So, I would travel to events with him.
“He is great company. He’s a clever man—very, very intelligent.
“I have a lot of affection for him. I will be very sad to see him go.”
Lewis Jones will take over from McDonald this month, while referee George Noble also officiated his final PDC world final at Ally Pally last night, having begun his career on the old BDO circuit 31 years ago.
