France captain, Hugo Lloris, has lauded teammate, Olivier Giroud after the AC Milan striker equaled Arsenal legend Thierry Henry’s France’s all-time top goal scorer record.
Giroud scored a brace as France came from behind to beat Australia 4-1 in a World Cup tie in Qatar.
Giroud’s two goals against Australia means he has now scored 51 goals for Les Bleus and can surpass Henry’s record in France’s next match against Denmark on Saturday.
Reacting, Lloris said he hoped the 36-year-old surpassed Henry’s record.
“I think Olivier deserved a lot of credit,” Lloris told the BBC post-match.
“He’s an example of football to never give up. The last few months he was in and he was out but he never lost focus and it is important.
“It’s a big achievement to equal Thierry Henry and I hope he’ll go ahead. For all the team it is a good start and for the striker two goals is great.”
