World Cup Legend Calls It Quits at 40 Following England's Stunning Victory Over Mexico

WORLD CUP icon Guillermo Ochoa has officially retired from football.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper announced prior to the 2026 World Cup that he would be hanging up his boots afterwards.

Ochoa lost his spot as Mexico’s No1 at this tournament, having held the shirt since 2014.

But he was handed some farewell minutes at the Azteca Stadium in his nation’s .

Nicknamed Memo, he earned an incredible 153 Mexico caps, with 12 coming at World Cup finals.

Speaking after the game, he confirmed it was his final game for El Tri, saying: “My first game, Azteca. My last game, Azteca.

“It’s been a beautiful final chapter of my career. Thank you, everyone.”

He was thrown into the air by his team-mates after the game as he said goodbye to fans alongside his family, having been named in SIX different World Cup squads dating back to 2006.

However, he remained in Javier Aguirre’s squad to support their efforts as co-hosts at this tournament alongside Canada and USA.

But he was powerless as he watched Mexico crash out of the World Cup following a thrilling Last 16 tie with England, which saw a red card and two penalties.

A brace from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane’s second half penalty were enough to squeeze the Three Lions into a quarter-final tie against Norway.

The defeat left Ochoa in tears on the pitch after the game following Mexico’s first-ever World Cup loss at the Azteca Stadium, and only third there in 90 competitive games.

England’s victory has booked them a date with Norway in the quarter-finals after Erling Haaland’s brace inspired them to a 2-1 win over Brazil.
