A WOMAN in her 50s has died after she drove the wrong way down a motorway, it is understood.
The victim was allegedly driving her Nissan Juke in the wrong direction when it collided with a BMW X5 between Junction 21 and 22 of the M62.
She died at the scene after suffering serious injuries while the BMW driver and passengers were treated for minor injuries.
Greater Manchester Police raced to the scene at 11pm yesterday and the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for information.
The M62 remains closed after the crash while recovery is underway and it could stay shut for “several hours” National Highways warned.
The smash covered the eastbound carriageway in “extensive debris” it added.
No arrests have been made so far, police confirmed.
A spokesperson said: “Officers from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are appealing for information following a fatal collision that occurred on the M62 in Rochdale.
“At around 11pm yesterday we were called to reports of an incident where a grey Nissan Juke collided with a grey BMW X5 between Junction 21 and 22 of the M62.
“It is believed the Nissan was travelling in the wrong direction on the eastbound carriageway prior to the collision.
“The driver of the Nissan, a woman aged in her 50s, suffered serious injuries following the collision and sadly died at the scene.
“The driver and passengers of the BMW were treated for minor injuries.
“No arrests have been made at this time in relation to this incident.
“The Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this to come forward.
“They are keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area in the moments leading up to the incident.
