A WOMAN has died after a horror two-car smash on a major A-road when a Honda collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction.
Emergency services raced to the A69 between Haydon Bridge and Hexham, , just before 1.30pm yesterday.
A black Honda was travelling westbound when it crashed into a blue Tiguan heading the other way, cops said.
Tragically, the woman in her 70s behind the wheel of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Honda, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital.
A section of the A69 was closed following the crash while emergency crews dealt with the scene.
The road has since reopened as cops continue to investigate the circumstances of the fatal collision.
Sergeant Greg Huntley, of Northumbria , said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident where a woman has lost her life.
“The thoughts of everyone here at Northumbria Police are with her loved ones.
“Our is underway, and we are now appealing for further witnesses who we have not yet spoken with to come forward.
“We know this is a very busy stretch of road in Northumberland – and there will have likely been many motorists passing in both directions.
