The horrifying spectacle unfolded in front of a crowd – including children – on Thursday.
People who have sex before marriage can be caned under the harsh decrees – only enforced in the Aceh province of Indonesia.
Violent punishments are also dished out for gambling, adultery, drinking alcohol, gay sex and holding hands outside of marriage.
The couple were convicted of adultery at Banda Aceh Sharia Court last month and sentenced to 100 lashings each.
Heartbreaking photos show the woman wincing with pain and holding up her hand for mercy while the cane hangs behind her, about to strike.
The man’s beatings were so severe that they had to be halted at strike 60, according to news outlet AJNN.
“Perhaps his health was a little compromised, or he simply couldn’t handle the whipping. So we stopped him first to give him a chance to rest”, said Darma Mustika, a senior official of the regional atorney’s office.

The caning then continued – up to 100 lashings total.
Eight others were beaten – recieving between 16 and 21 lashes – for mingling at a birthday party.
Under Sharia law, the mixing of men and women who are not family is strictly forbidden.
The pain of the punishment – as well as the public shaming – is inteneded to deter horrified onlookers from committing the same “crimes”.
It comes just weeks after for having sex outside marriage in the same Aceh province.
Two men and two women were each lashed 100 times for violating Sharia law.
At one point, the masked official carrying out the beatings – known as the algojo – appeared to take pity on one woman and whisper words of support in her ear.
The woman – whose face was partially covered by a white scarf – was photographed weeping as she fell to the ground in agony.
The floggings took place in front of a crowd, including children, that gathered to watch.
In the course of the brutal spectacle, four other people were lashed 22 times for the lesser of physical intimacy, which can mean hugging and kissing.
Two others received seven lashes each for being too close to each other, which can include holding hands.
Another man was flogged 20 times for consuming alcohol.
