Two lawyers representing the 41-year-old have announced they will file a complaint to identify the person who took and shared the photos.
The unidentified man had recently moved to Angri in Campania, Italy with his wife.
He had suggested up-sizing to a larger property that could accommodate an extra person.
According to local media , he asked to host his ex-wife there which sparked a series of furious rows culminating in the vicious act.
The man reportedly woke up in pain on May 1 to find himself in a pool of his own blood.
His wife had allegedly waited until he fell asleep during a post-lunch nap, grabbed a kitchen knife and sliced off his penis.
The victim managed to reach his front door and call for help before he was rushed to hospital.
By the time the man arrived he had lost nearly half of his blood.
Paramedics had put his severed genitals on ice in the hopes it could be attached.
But once in the hospital, surgeons said it would be impossible.
Now images have surfaced on social media showing the man lying in his hospital bed, along with a photograph of his penis sealed in a medical bag.
Lawyers Angelo and Sergio Pisani, representing the victim, said: “The shocking images of the emasculated man, filmed on a hospital bed, along with a photograph of his penis in a sealed medical bag, are circulating online through chat rooms and social media in a climate of genuine media hype.”
“This material is of unprecedented gravity”, they added.
The man’s wife was arrested at the scene after cops found her pacing around in a dazed state with the bloody knife allegedly still in her hand.
She has been charged with attempted murder.
Authorities are also investigating the last meal the man ate in an attempt to find out whether the wife had drugged him before the attack.
The alleged assault is being investigated by a team of Carabinieri police led by Commander Gianfranco Albanese and local prosecutor Gianluca Caputo.
It follows a similar in a frenzied stabbing attack.
At the scene officers found the body of a man “with clear signs of having suffered a violent death”.
The woman was also at the home and confessed to her partner’s murder, police said.
