Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has linked the ongoing low voter turnout during elections in Nigeria to the manipulation of the electoral process and various fraudulent activities carried out by desperate politicians.

Otti made these remarks in Port Harcourt at the opening ceremony of the First International Conference on Advancing Politics and Governance for Sustainable Development, which was organized by the Centre for Politics at the University of Port Harcourt.

He expressed his worries that electoral malpractice has diminished public trust, resulting in widespread voter apathy.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, the former Senate Minority Chief Whip, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, noted that despite significant amounts of money spent on political mobilization, voter participation continues to decline.

“There is a noticeable decline in voter turnout in successive elections despite the increasing costs of political mobilization. People have become disillusioned, especially following the 2023 general elections,” he remarked.

Otti urged Nigerians, especially intellectuals, policymakers, and community leaders, to take charge of the political process and strive for genuine democratic reforms.

“Complaining from the sidelines is no longer an option. We must start mobilizing our best to advocate for a new order and make a compelling case for change within democratic boundaries,” he emphasized.

The governor highlighted that the current levels of unemployment, poverty, and economic hardship in Africa are unacceptable, asserting that restoration is achievable if citizens reclaim their collective power.
