Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor, Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, widely known as Alibaba, has expressed his thoughts on polygamy, asserting that the practice can fulfill both practical and cultural roles.

During a discussion with media personality Nedu, Alibaba contended that having multiple wives can sometimes foster stability in relationships by encouraging collaboration and diminishing tension among spouses.

“Some people think that having just one wife may lead to difficulties in controlling her. However, when she realizes that there is another woman involved, she tends to behave better because she understands that if she misbehaves, there’s another option available,” Alibaba stated.

Reflecting on traditional customs in certain regions of Nigeria, Alibaba mentioned that in historical Ibadan, some women actually encouraged their husbands to take on additional wives to avert infidelity and maintain peace at home.

“I know of a woman in Ibadan who supported her husband in becoming a polygamist. In the past, some women would marry younger girls and present them to their husbands because they did not want their men to have mistresses,” he elaborated.

He also pointed out that in some cases, polygamy emerged from necessity rather than personal preference.

“When a man passes away and his wife is still young or has small children, the family might gather the brothers and ask which one of them can take care of this woman. This is also part of how polygamy developed,” he remarked.

While recognizing that the subject is still contentious, Alibaba asserted that polygamy possesses significance in specific social and cultural settings.

“People may argue that it’s wrong, but many of those same individuals end up having children with several partners,” he concluded.
