Netflix has increasingly moved into the world of fantasy, with projects like The Witcher and Shadow and Bone making a name for themselves on the platform. Now, it seems they’re moving further into the science fiction fantasy subgenre that is giant robots with the live-action Gundam movie coming to the streamer. And we’re certainly not complaining.
Fans of the subgenre won’t be unfamiliar with Netflix’s previous projects pairing colossal fighting machines mixing it up on the battlefield. Their Voltron reboot, Voltron: Legendary Defender, which ran from 2016-2018, has a large following. Pacific Rim: The Black made its debut on the platform in March. However, both of those shows are animated.
Gundam will be the first live-action Netflix Original centered on mechas. In fact, in its over 40-year history, the Gundam franchise has never stepped foot outside of the world of animation. Each series and film, along with their sequels, have been expertly drawn and animated for audiences. This adaptation marks a colossal step into a new frontier for the Gundam universe.
Netflix is ushering in a new age for the franchise, and we can’t wait to see the show in action. Unfortunately, however, all of us are going to have to wait a while for the Gundam movie.
There’s not much known about Gundam outside of Deadline‘s report that Brian K. Vaughan has been tapped to write the film and Jordan Vogt-Roberts has signed on to direct.
Vaughn is known for his work in the comics world with his series Runaways, Ex Machina, and Y: The Last Man all being adapted for the small and silver screen. Vogt-Roberts’ addition will mean a reunion for him and Legendary Entertainment as he directed Skull Island.
Gundam movie release date
A release date has yet to be announced for Gundam. The film is still in the early days of development.
We don’t have a synopsis either, but the source material is set in the Universal Century. It’s a time period in which humans have expanded their territory into space colonies. Seeking independence from Earth, the colonies wage war with Earthlings, and these battles are fought in mobile suits which are gigantic weaponized manned robots.
We’ll keep you posted on more news concerning the Gundam movie as it comes in.
